Kenya Opens its Borders: Visa-Free Travel for Most African Nationals

In a defining move for continental unity and tourism, Kenya has officially dropped visa and eTA requirements for all African visitors—excluding nationals of Somalia and Libya—thus removing entry barriers for most of the continent. Travelers from eligible countries can now enter Kenya without advance authorization and stay for up to two months, while East African Community (EAC) citizens continue to enjoy the existing privilege of a six-month stay under the regional free-movement protocols

This new era of openness not only honours Kenya’s “open skies” philosophy but also reflects its commitment to bolstering intra-African trade, tourism, and investment opportunities. The government is also overhauling security and passenger processing systems—proposing expedited approvals with a maximum turnaround window of 72 hours, and implementing advanced screening technologies like API/PNR systems to enhance efficiency at entry points

While the majority of African nations are now granted seamless travel access, Somalia and Libya remain exceptions, owing to prevailing security complexities

Why This Matters

  • Enhances regional integration, cultural exchange, and economic cooperation across Africa.

  • Positions Kenya as a premier tourism and business hub, attracting spontaneous visits and investment.

  • Reduces administrative delays, boosting travel spontaneity for families, entrepreneurs, and tourists alike
